The 1970s saw the birth of the School Council, a big variation in school uniform and adult students in the sixth form for the first time. The 70s also the UK joining the Common Market and the provision of saw equal pay rights for women and a rise in the number of girls applying to go to university.

It was a time of big changes at WGHS.

Three headmistresses were in charge of WGHS in the 1970s: Miss Scargill (1948 - 1972) , Miss Born (1972 - 1976) and Miss Mottershead (1976 - 1983).

School Magazines:

Thanks to a school reunion of 'golden girls' in 2023 (celebrating half a century since they graduated from High School) I have been able to digitize the school magazines from 1971 and 1973 - quite a mean feat, as they are not short documents and data in columns are difficult to copy! They are in pdf form.
